"Cut-and-Past Culture: The New Collage" Article by ARTNews

What are some of the ways that contemporary collage, as described in the article, differs from approaches to collage in the 20th and 21st Century?

Contemporary collage lives amongst a digital age, during the height of media applications like Instagram making art more accessible and allowing novice artists have the opportunity to participate in ways they couldn't before. There is also new room to explore the combination and mixing of still imagery and digital features like video, audio, animation, etc...

Given what you have seen and read in the article, why do you think collage as a strategy for making appeals to so many artists today?

As Herrmann stated in the article, "Collage has become a representative for that state of cultural production. At the same time, I think it transcends it". I believe that the representational mediums that make up a collage have their own context and when put together generate a new cultural concept within the work. A collage's tactile nature and physical presence in front of the viewer also grounds the concept it is depicting (like a critique or commentary) in reality.
